I took studio art classes in high school and as an undergraduate at Sarah Lawrence College, but then, I moved across country to attend graduate school in English [Creative Writing] (on a full fellowship), and I worked as a journalist following graduation. Then, in my early thirties, I found myself wanting to get back to making art. First, I audited painting and drawing classes at Rice University, studying with Katie Kahn and John Sparagana. At Rice, I learned about Houston’s museum school, The Glassell School of Art. And so I enrolled in Intro to 2-D Design with Shahzia Sikander (who I later took private lessons from) and Intro to Painting with Dana Frankfort. And I decided to go through the school’s lengthy Certificate of Achievement program. I had so many gifted teachers there in Collage, Critical Theory, Professional Practice, Life Drawing, Painting, and much more. After graduating, I continued to seek out workshops and classes, taking workshops at Penland School of Craft in Encaustic Painting, Sign Painting, Color Theory and Painting Abstractly, and Diving into Authenticity as well as taking online courses in Ink Painting and Encaustic Painting and Color Theory. After all these years of being a work in progress, I am finally hoping to establish myself as a professional painter. The art practice that I have chosen to pursue is the making of abstract mono prints, abstract acrylic paintings, abstract oil paintings, jumbo collages, and artist books.
